Alexandra Treadaway-Hoare

Using color and shapes, I wish to bring to the viewer my idea of beauty, intrigue and magic. I paint with watercolors because I enjoy the blossoming of my images on the watercolor paper. My eyes are drawn to animals, insects and birds — and having lived in many countries, landscapes intrigue me.

I live in Maryland with 4 hounds, and I have shown Hounds (Afghan Hounds and Whippets) in Conformation and competed in Field Trials over the last 20 years. My own dogs and those of others are frequent subjects of my paintings.

Growing Up Around the Globe

Born and raised in Southeast Asia: Indonesia, Java, Borneo, Sumatra, Hong-Kong and the Philippines; I attended school in Morocco, England, Scotland and Germany. I attended university in the Philippines and Canada. All of this travel gave me wonderful exposure to a vast variety of colors, flavours, smells, plants, insects and animals!

My parents were avid collectors of indigenous art from the local Asian artists. My father had a 750,000 butterfly collection of international reputation. This all amounted to a kaleidoscope of colors and shapes for my perusal and inspiration in my work.

It’s Never Too Late to Be an Artist

At age 50 I moved on from working in the corporate, academic and not-for-profit markets and began to explore making art. Approximately a decade ago I took a watercolor class at the Smithsonian Institute and have continued studying under the same professor to this date.

My art has been accepted into numerous juried shows, where I’ve won 1st through 3rd place awards. I had solo shows at The Boulders AZ, the Rockville Mayor’s Office in Maryland, and Brookside Gardens in Montgomery County, Maryland. Certain of my works are in permanent and public display collections of Marymount Animal Hospital and The Prevention of Blindness Society. My paintings are in private collections in the Philippines, Italy, Great Britain, and the United States as both purchases and commissions.
